Windows 10 news: digital assistant Cortana and Spartan browser
Microsoft reinvents Windows with important and bold new apps to make up for lost ground.
Eclipsed by the release of futuristic holographic lenses HoloLens, Microsoft has unveiled some new features its newest OS, Windows 10, will have. Among its multiple novelties, it has highlighted two: the integration of the digital assistant Cortana and a web browser named Spartan.
Free and unique
Let’s start from the beginning: the first thing is that Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1 will converge into Windows 10 at the end of 2015. There will be only one OS for all devices and it will fit all sizes, from mobiles to TV screens. The second thing is that the Windows 10 update will be free for all said systems, but only during its first year on the market. Clearly, Microsoft wants to fasten up the transition process and secure its success.
Other new things are the return of the iconic Start button on the Home screen, a lateral notification menu named “Action Center”, a unified and simplified Control Panel, a built in Skype and almost complete compatibility with Xbox (so you can play Xbox games on your PC).
Cortana gets big
To strengthen Windows 10’s appeal, Microsoft has decided to include Cortana in desktop computers (currently, it is only available in mobile devices). Its function is the same than for smartphones and tablets, but it has a broader orientation and it’s more personalized. Cortana will learn from the user’s habits and tastes.
The web with Spartan
The other column seeks to reinforce Internet usage. This is why they have developed Spartan (a code name), a new web browser that seeks to distance itself from the old Explorer. The idea is to renew the way of using the web and adding new functions.
The first one is the creation of a function that allows to underline things by hand or create annotations on webs to highlight the most important information. These highlights will be stored and you can share them in social networks or by email, so it will be easier to share concrete information. The second new function is improved reading, that allows to eliminate everything that isn’t useful and show only pure information (without ads or other sorts of publicity). There is also a list of pending things to read. Lastly, Spartan will integrate Cortana to its browsing model, not only to run the system by voice, but also to learn from our habits and even foresee and complement our information needs. This new browser will also allow you to read content offline.
