If you are a Windows 8.1 user and have updated to the latest Microsoft versions for your OS, you must have noticed that, sometimes, your PC unexpectedly slows down until you cannot open or run any application you choose in the Home Menu.
Windows 8.1 is the updated and improved version of Windows 8, which corrects some voids and errors within the OS that, eventually, will stabilize and speed up your PC and all of its components, or simply leave the names and go back to the beginning.
Ever since the Windows Vista version, the hard drive, or hard drives, are defragmented automatically by default. This means that he hard drive(s) will be defragmented at regular intervals and the user does not have to intervene. As the hard drive storage capacity increases each day and we store a lot of data in them, defragmentation takes longer to complete and it can make us feel that our PC is not working as fast as it used to.
To correct these mistakes in Windows 8.1, you can follow the the solutions presented below:
STEP 1
Press the CONTROL + SHIFT + ESC keys. This will open the Task Manager. Here, you can check the CPU usage and Random Access Memory or RAM.
STEP 2
Now, press the Home button of Windows 8.1 and open the Control Panel. Once it opens, click on the option “System and Security”, and finally click on “Administrative Tools”.
After this, click on the option “Defragment and Optimize the Units”. In this window, you will be able to see all the units that are connected to your PC, such as Unit C:, D:, E:, and the USB memory units (F:), if there are any.
We follow these steps to deactivate the Defragmentation and Optimization of the PC units that are active by default in our OS. When this option is activated, the units are defragmented and optimized periodically or daily, depending on how the unit maintenance is configured in the PC’s hard drive.
Then, as you can see in the picture, you choose the unit that you’d like to deactivate. It is advisable to deactivate all of the units, but that depends on the user.
You can choose 3 options to run the Defragmentation and Optimization of your HDD Unit:
- Daily
- Weekly
- Monthly
- If you don’t any, you can deactivate both boxes for each HDD unit.
Restart the PC so that all the previous changes are applied.
You can activate these Options if you want to Optimize all your hard drive units (HDD-USB).
This is how we solve the excess hard drive and RAM usage of our PC.
If these steps do not work, we can help you. Call us or write to us and one of our technicians will go to your house to help you to optimize and restore your hard drive. We provide computer diagnostic and assistance services in Houston, Spring and The Woodlands.
